Conference titled Utility services – perspectives of the future

Conference on September 19 and 20, 2024 in the Olimia Congress Center in Podčetrtek

In the professionally richly designed conference of municipal services economy  two-day program, we thought together about the opportunities that await us in the future.

The first day began with welcoming speeches and the opening of the conference by the President of the Chamber of Municipal Economy of Slovenia, the Minister of Environment, Climate and Energy, the President of the Community of Municipalities of Slovenia and the President of EurEau. Round tables on the impact of global trends on the Slovenian economy followed. After a short break, we talked about climate change and predictions about its interference in the work of communal activities, about the future of artificial intelligence and cyber (in)security.

13. Conference of municipal services economy – day 2

On the second day, the program offered several different topics. One of them was the economic aspects of the implementation of economic public services, namely future trends, artificial intelligence in the communal economy, sustainable business financing. Finally, there was an interactive discussion on current issues. An important topic was drinking water in Europe, climate change and sources of drinking water in Slovenia, risk management and strengthening the climate resilience of water supply systems and the business continuity management system.

We touched on the renewal of the EU directive on municipal wastewater treatment, on the challenges of rainwater management with blue-green infrastructure, on handling sludge from KČN over time, on sludge as a source of strategic raw materials, and on measurement systems on the sewage network. The fourth, for us the most interesting, topic of the program was waste management. The expectations for the future, the national awareness strategy and thus also the move towards more responsible waste management, the good practice of drawing European funds through the experience with underground collection points were presented. The practice of using a camera on a garbage truck was also presented.

The final topic was the arrangement and cleaning of public areas. As part of this, we talked about the importance of data for the management of urban trees, the legal regulation of public green areas and their actual management, the importance of green areas for health and the importance of well organized urban green areas for the well-being of citizens.
